Recent Newspaper Images...

Here are a few tear sheets of my most recent work in the Dallas Morning News.  It was a varied month, with everything from country music stars to citizens dealing with community water issues.

Jason vs. Comedian Barry Sobel...

I had a lot of fun shooting this comedy showcase for the news.  Comedian Barry Sobel may not be be as well known as Chris Rock or Louie CK, but he's been acting and telling jokes in movies and television since the 1980's.  He's the kind of comedian that other comedians go see (which is one of the highest honors for a comedian).  He's also incredibly cool and gracious!  When I arranged to photograph his set, he said I could shoot ON the stage, if I wanted!  What?!?  Yeah, he said to shoot anywhere, even on the stage to get a great shot of him and the crowd together.

Now, I'm not one to stand on a stage during a performance, but the venue had a little nook at the back of the stage for actors to wait and hide behind.  Using that spot, I think I captured the event pretty well. It's a nice change from the average comedy show image!

Some Senior Fun!!!

I had a lot of fun photographing the cover and main feature photos for Senior Living recently.  I wish I could dance half as well as I can shoot!  I've always wanted to be a better dancer... no, simply a dancer of any sort!  These seniors know how to party.

I had a lot of stuff in print this summer, and I figured I would take a moment to post a few tear sheets...

More Recent Work: May 2015 Edition...

It's been a while since I've posted some tear sheets from recent work.  I'm still busy shooting every week and I have a ton of images to share.  I just don't blog every day, like I used to.  Here are some pictures that ran in The Dallas Observer, Dallas Child, and The Dallas Morning News.  Oh, and a link to images from the sixth annual HomeGrown Fest concert, including Old 97's and Spoon!

And finally, my HomeGrown concert images for D Magazine...

Fighting For Dallas...

I really enjoyed meeting Marcos Ronquillo after a week of talking to his team, trying to find the best day for our photo shoot.  It was actually very overcast, and they were worried it wouldn't be a good day to shoot... but, those are my favorite days!  We met at the D Magazine offices and then headed down to the Trinity River.  Marcos, who has boxed in the past, was gracious enough to put on some gloves for the picture.  The photo editor suggested the visual, since the story reflects his sparring with other city officials regarding the proposed Trinity tollway - but you can read the current issue of D Magazine to find out more on that!

Watch for this issue on stands through the rest of the month...

Ana and the President...

I had the chance to do a portrait of a very special subject last week.  Her name is Ana Zamora.  When the news called and asked me to take this assignment, I thought it sounded very interesting.  Ana, born in Mexico, moved to the United States at one year of age.  Now 21 years old, she is a college student, a respected employee at a downtown Dallas business, and just about the nicest person I've met all year.  She's exactly what you think of when the idea of "model citizen" comes to mind.  But, that's the catch... she's not a legal US citizen, because her parents didn't legally immigrate to the country.

The story in the paper talks about her invitation to sit with the first lady during president Obama's state of the union speech.  It mentions how people like Ana are a shining example of the president's initiative to help families like Ana's stay in the US.  I think she was a great choice to exemplify the matter.  The follow-up story that ran a few days later used a smaller version of the same image, cropped in tight.  It talks about the cold reception Obama's remarks gathered.  It's quite a shame, because anyone who spent some time with Ana would clearly see how vital people like her are to this country.  Hopefully, more people will get behind this cause.

I'm Sooooooo Sorry!!!

I'm so sorry for not updating my blog sooner.  I can't believe I let it go for months.  That is pretty shameful.  I have been pretty busy with shoots.  When I'm not shooting, I'm often taking care of the boys or working on a personal project (like slowly restoring a 1973 Mercedes 280c).  Gosh, the amount of cool shoots I've done over the las few months could take up a dozen new posts, and maybe I'll dig through my files and post about them soon.  In the meantime, here are some Dallas Morning News assignments I've done over the last couple weeks.  They include an MLK Day memorial march, a yoga class that incorporates live violin music, and a barbecue "smoke camp" event.  Enjoy!

Dean Fearing Is More Than Just A Chef...

Most people know the charming and always-friendly Dean Fearing for his amazing food, being one of Dallas' best-known and loved celebrity chefs.  But, he's also a wizard on the fretboard, heating up his guitar with his group, The Lost Coyote band.  I was more than happy to shoot the band's promo photo, which they needed for an issue of Dallas Modern Luxury magazine.  I'd photographed him several times now, once for the cover Chefwear's catalog and a few times for PR firms, newspapers, and magazines.  Here's how Modern Luxury used my image...

Children at the Perot Museum...

I love working with children!  They are an absolute blast to photograph.  Maybe it's because I have three little boys of my own.  Or, maybe it's just because kids don't try to hide their awe and wonder, which shows in their photos.  Either way, it makes shooting at the Perot so much fun!  My images are used on all sorts of brochures, billboards, media packets, and websites.  It's exciting to see them in each new poster, newsletter, and banner.  Every time a new piece comes out, I get excited to see it.

This new brochure was especially great to see, because it is so well done.  The card stock is a nice soft, smooth matte, and it has a heavy weight that feels just right to my fingers.  The images were used very well and they balance the text perfectly.  The design layout is great for a brochure.  My scanner really doesn't do it justice... it looks soooo much better in real life.  And, the kids!  Look at all the learning, the fun, the wonder, the awe, the excitement!  I think their faces say it all... the Perot Museum is one of the best places to be in Dallas!
